Steven Dewey Mosler, 69, of Parsons died in an auto accident Monday evening, Jan. 31, 2011, west of Parsons.
He was born Nov. 28, 1941, in Oswego to Dewey G. and Stella M. (McClanahan) Mosler. He was raised on the family farm south of McCune, where he was an avid hunter. He was also an accomplished marksman and won many sporting clay tournaments. He attended McCune schools and graduated from Labette County High School in Altamont with the Class of 1959. During his school years he was active in music, both vocal and instrumental. He pursued his talents by attending Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, from which he graduated in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in music. He began his career in education by teaching music at Cherokee, Weir and West Mineral grade schools. He earned his master’s in psychology in 1970 and his education specialist degree in 1976 from Pittsburg State University. He eventually went into school administration working in western Kansas. Wanting a change, Steve moved to Montana and eventually Alaska, working as a psychologist and school counselor. He retired from Alaska state service in 1995. Steve continued to work in Alaska by contracting privately and with the public school system as a psychologist. During this time he was honored to be able to work in the remote villages on the Aleutian Islands and the Arctic until he retired again in 2008.
Mr. Mosler was proud of being an instrument-rated pilot. He delighted in finding a variety of uses for his tractors around the farm.
On Aug. 4, 1961, he married Lana Sue Marchbanks in McCune. They were later divorced. While in western Kansas, he married Janet Coen. They were later divorced.
Survivors include Lana Mosler Surridge of the home; two daughters, Jolene Gaier of Oswego and Christine Parsons and her husband, Doug, two sons, Steven Brisbin and Stetson Mosler-Brisbin of McCune; a granddaughter, Stephanie Cheney and her husband, Aaron, and two daughters, Skyler and Rilynn of Guthrie, Okla.; a stepdaughter Shana Rudd and her husband, Bryan, daughter Jordan and son Cody, all of Guthrie, Okla.; as well as other family members, Dick and Paula Surridge of Parsons, Connie Surridge of Altamont and Sindy and Mike Buffington of Parsons and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son-in-law, Ralph W. Gaier, on Aug. 11, 2010.
Mr. Mosler has been cremated. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Murdock Funeral Home in Oswego. The family will receive friends after the service.
