ChiSox top Rays in battle of leaders
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- The AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox won the first Tropicana Field game between teams in sole possession of first place in their divisions Thursday, cooling off the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays 5-1.
John Danks (4-4) allowed one run and six hits in six innings to beat Edwin Jackson (3-4) for the second time this season. He pitched seven scoreless innings to beat the right-hander 6-0 on April 20, a loss that l...
Goggin leads the way at Memorial
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) -- Jack Nicklaus always envisioned the Memorial as a northern version of the Masters, from the superb course conditions to super slick greens, from caddies wearing white coveralls to grounds so immaculate that nary a cigarette butt is to be found.
He got his wish Thursday, at least with the greens.
Mathew Goggin spent as little time on them as possible, taking only nine putts over his final nine holes on his way to a 7-under...

Royals demote Butler, lose again
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- If Jose Guillen's profanity-filled tirade was meant to light a fire under the lethargic Kansas City Royals, Kevin Slowey did a good job of dousing the flames. The Minnesota right-hander threw his first major league complete game and Carlos Gomez had four hits and two RBI, leading the Twins to a 5-1 victory Thursday night that stretched KC's losing streak to 11 straight. It's the longest skid in the majors this year...
Topeka won't enforce changes in garage sale signs
TOPEKA (AP) -- Topeka city officials have backed off plans to change the way they enforce an ordinance dealing with temporary signs for garage sales. City spokesman David Bevens said officials this week considered changing practices, including hiring three part-time employees to work Thursday through Sunday enforcing sign regulations. But Bevens said officials decided to discard the idea because the legal department concluded the idea amou...
Government defends federal drug law
WICHITA (AP) -- Prosecutors on Wednesday defended the constitutionality of federal drug laws, spurning defense arguments seeking dismissal of an indictment charging a Kansas physician with illegally prescribing narcotic painkillers linked to 56 overdose deaths.
Court documents filed by the government in the criminal case against Dr. Stephen Schneider and his wife, Linda, noted the arguments raised by the couple's criminal defense attorneys ar...
Venus, Jankovic advance at Open
PARIS (AP) -- Venus Williams and Jelena Jankovic reached the third round at the French Open today, one easing through her match and the other playing through pain.
The eighth-seeded Williams used a six-game run to beat 241st-ranked qualifier Selima Sfar of Tunisia 6-2, 6-4. Jankovic, seeded third and a semifinalist at Roland Garros last year, was bothered by a right arm injury but defeated Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 6-2, 7-6 (5).
Oral Roberts provost resigns
TULSA (AP) -- The provost of Oral Roberts University, who last fall said he'd quit if Richard Roberts was reinstated as the school's president and described a "culture of fear" at the evangelical institution, is resigning. Mark Lewandowski plans to leave the post on June 24 and will remain a faculty member. He was named ORU's top academic officer last May. He said Wednesday he was not forced to step down and sees himself "maintaining a rol...
BOSTON (AP) -- Ray Allen raised his arms to fire up the Boston crowd with 4.5 seconds left. The struggling Celtics sharpshooter already had excited the fans by finding his shooting touch Wednesday night and helping Boston move one win away from its first NBA finals in 21 years. "My feeling now is no different from if I had scored 10 points and we still won the game," said Allen, who scored 29 in the 106-102 win over the Pistons. "It's a gr...
Reeling Royals drop 10th straight
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- This one hit the Kansas City Royals like a sucker punch to the belly, and perhaps planted the seeds of an ugly clubhouse rebellion.
Craig Monroe's three-run homer with two out in the ninth capped a five-run rally, then Justin Morneau hit a leadoff homer in the 10th to lift Minnesota to a 9-8 victory Wednesday night and stun the Royals with their 10th straight loss.
Afterward, Royals outfielder Jose Guillen let loose i...
Pens win must-win Game 3
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Sidney Crosby is the Pittsburgh Penguins' leader. Their best player. The franchise figurehead. A player who brings out the best in those who surround him, even if the 20-year-old is half the age of some.
On a night that effectively could have ended the Penguins' Stanley Cup run in every way except mathematically, Crosby showed another side to his teammates: Sidney Crosby, the loner.
In the Penguins' dressing room before the...

Hail hurts crops in western part of state
SCOTT CITY -- Memorial Day weekend storms that spawned tornadoes also packed some whopping hail that damaged some western Kansas crops.
"Three miles north of Scott City it was hailing baseballs, but they weren't getting any rain in town," said Glenda Randall, who farms with her husband, Richard, in Scott County.
She said crop adjusters were sitting at her kitchen table Wednesday preparing to assess the damage.
"Depending on where you were sta...
Bush plans visit to Kansas
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush will be in Kansas for a fundraiser today, but several of the state's top Republicans are skipping the event.
Both of the state's Republican senators are taking a pass, as are both GOP congressmen. They say the luncheon with Bush, whose popularity is at record lows, conflicts with prior commitments.
The fundraiser at a private home in Bucyrus, Kan., is expected to raise at least $420,000 for the state GOP and ...
