Surprise,Surprise
SOUTHPORT, England (AP) -- Tiger Woods on crutches was supposed to be a chance for someone else to seize the spotlight at the British Open. Greg Norman wasn't the guy anyone had in mind. Neither was David Duval. Indeed, Royal Birkdale proved to be fertile ground for fairy tales on Friday. K.J. Choi rolled in a 25-foot birdie on the final hole for a 3-under 67 in more gloom and wind along the Irish Sea, giving him his first lead in a major...

Doping busts weigh on riders' minds
NIMES, France (AP) -- Mark Cavendish wants to talk about his latest stage victory -- not doping. British cyclist David Millar pleads with fans: "Please, don't give up on us."
This may not be easy. This, after all, is the Tour de France.
Cavendish, a British sprint specialist on Team Columbia, captured the 13th stage Friday -- the fourth stage he has won and second in a row. He prevailed over a 113-mile course on a hot and wind-swept day along...

The Associated Press Brad Keselowski always thought he'd get a chance to go out and enjoy being one of his sport's rising stars. Wrong. Ask the 24-year-old Nationwide Series driver if he has a life these days and he can't even muster the energy to laugh. "I would say no, 35 weeks a year is a grueling schedule," he said. "To be honest I think the Nationwide schedule is tougher than the (Sprint) Cup Series schedule. So, you know, it presen...

Royals hopeful of stable second half
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Their starting shortstop's batting average plummeted 100 points and their two hitting stars of the future are falling short -- way short, some say -- of lofty expectations. But the Kansas City Royals believe those very troubles, including a 12-game losing streak in late May, can contribute to an improved and more stable second half of the season. "We've really started to play well together, now that we've been thro...

Wind is the threat at British Open
SOUTHPORT, England (AP) -- Adam Scott and Justin Rose, friends since they were teenagers and top contenders in this British Open without Tiger Woods, passed each other on the putting green Wednesday and stopped to discuss their final day of preparation.
"Did you play?" Rose said.
"Nine holes," Scott said with a smile, his hand on the bill of his cap to keep it from blowing off. "Not much point today."
That was more than Rose had on his agenda...

The matchup that might have been
NEW YORK (AP) -- Marquee starters were long gone. So were nearly all the other pitchers. His bullpen empty, National League manager Clint Hurdle approached David Wright and asked whether he had the right stuff to take the mound and close out the All-Star game. Did the New York Mets third baseman think chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon or general manager Omar Minaya would mind? "Don't worry," Wright remembered saying. "They're probably sl...

Lee, Sheets to start game
NEW YORK (AP) -- Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee ace Ben Sheets were picked as the starting pitchers for tonight's All-Star game at Yankee Stadium. Lee is 12-2 with a 2.31 ERA, a remarkable resurgence after the left-hander was demoted to the minors last season. He was chosen by American League manager Terry Francona of Boston. "I'm just honored to be here, to be honest with you," Lee said Monday. "To get the start is just ...

Perry sizzles,Creamer still hot
SILVIS, Ill. (AP) -- Kenny Perry again sizzled following a sluggish start and was two strokes off the lead Friday after the second round of the John Deere Classic.
Playing as well as anyone on the PGA Tour the past two months, the 47-year-old Perry birdied six of his final 10 holes while shooting 5-under 66. That put him in a three-way tie for second place at 11-under 131 with first-round co-leader Charlie Wi (67) and Eric Axley (66).
