LCC falls short vs. Neosho County

CHANUTE — The first conference win slipped away from the Labette Community College volleyball team on Wednesday night.
After the Cardinals won the first set in come-from- behind fashion, things were looking good for the visitors.
But the host Neosho County Panthers regrouped and won three-straight sets in knocking off the Cards 22-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-15.

Vikings host Golden Tornado on Friday

With mostly new faces in big roles, the Parsons High School football team suffered some growing pains last Friday night.
Fort Scott dominated from start to finish in a 65-7 win over the Vikings.

Labette County started the 2012 season with a road date at always-tough Pittsburg.
And this week, another tough road game follows.
The Grizzlies head to Chanute on Friday night in Week Two of the high school football season. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Chanute Community Sports Complex.

Gartner leads LCHS, Hudson leads Parsons at Fort Scott golf invite
FORT SCOTT — Led by a second place finish by Erica Gartner, the Labette County High School girls golf team took second place at the Fort Scott Invitational on a warm Tuesday.
A freshman, Gartner shot a 45 and took second place. Anderson County’s Bailey Rockers also shot a 45, but won a playoff hole for first.
Also for LCHS, Ranea White shot a 49 and finished seventh, Shania Riley was 10th overall (54) and Abbie Callahan finished 31st (64).

Grizzlies coach sees positives in loss

Despite a 49-15 loss to Pittsburg in the season-opener, Labette County Coach Jesse Ybarra was proud of how hard his team played in the second half against the always-tough Purple Dragons. The Grizzlies were down 35-0 at halftime, but kept battling. Chandler Carson and Jon Kelly had second-half touchdowns for the Grizzlies.

It has to be St. Paul vs. Chetopa.
The Indians and rival Green Hornets will clash on Friday night in Chetopa. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
St. Paul will look to improve to 2-0 after a 26-20 win over West Elk in Week One.

Burk gets first win at Oswego, Eureka up next for Indians

The Travis Burk era at Oswego started on a positive note.
The Indians knocked off Fredonia 38-20 last Friday in Burk’s first game as head coach.
“It was a great start to the season,” Burk said. “The kids were excited, and they worked hard for it.”
Oswego’s offense produced 520 yards of total offense, with 268 rushing and 252 passing.

LCC volleyball goes 0-4 at Texas tourney
The Labette Community College volleyball team went 0-44 at the Blinn College Tournament over the holiday weekend in Brenham, Tex.
Western Texas defeated Labette 25-17, 25-22, 25-20. Panola (Tex.) defeated Labette 25-16, 25-10, 25-17. Next, Trinity Valley (Tex.) knocked off LCC 25-15, 25-18, 25-12. Also, Blinn beat Labette 25-12, 25-20, 25-15.

It’s time to regroup for the Parsons High School football team.
After Friday’s 65-7 loss at Fort Scott in the season-opener, the Vikings have a lot to work on this week.

Dragons too much for LCHS
PITTSBURG — Pittsburg rolled to a 49-15 win over Labette County on Friday night in the high school football season-opener.
The Purple Dragons led 35-0 at the half and 49-0 in the third quarter en route to the lopsided win.
The Grizzlies got on the board in the fourth quarter on an 87-yard touchdown pass from Chandler Carson to Jon Kelly. Cole Reazin kicked the PAT.
Carson added a one-yard TD run before a safety accounted for the final margin.

Despite it being August, a Christmas tree was erected inside the Parsons Public Library, but rather than holiday ornaments it is covered with gifts to be distributed to newborn babies in November and December.

ST. PAUL — St. Paul High School survived a fourth-quarter push by West Elk to earn their first win, 26-20, of the young football season.
Sloppy play in the first half made the game closer than it should have been, but the Indian offensive line created opportunities for the St. Paul running backs in the second half, St. Paul Coach Doug Tuck said.

PITTSBURG — The Parsons High School varsity volleyball team went 0-3 on Thursday at Pittsburg.

ERIE — Erie High School hosted a varsity volleyball quad on Thursday against Riverton, Southeast, and Baxter Springs.
Erie won the first match 25-6 and 25-4. Bret McGuire recorded 13 aces, and Chelsea Oliphant recorded four aces. Lindsay Francis recorded five kills and four assists in the contest.
