Ball preps for Shrine Bowl game

For nearly 40 years, the top football seniors in Kansas have met on the gridiron to not only test one side of the state against the other, but also to raise money for a very important cause.
This year, Parsons will be involved in that game for the first time since 2004.

Parsons 14s swept at state
The Parsons Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-stars began play in the state tournament at Garden City on Friday with an 8-7 loss to Cimarron River.
Parsons led 4-0 after two innings and added to the lead with another run in the fourth, but Cimarron began chipping away in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to cut a 7-0 lead to 7-2.

SEK Senior Tour at Katy
The SEK Senior Tour took its annual stop at the Katy Golf Club Thursday afternoon for the 2011 Katy Golf Course Senior Tournament.
Sixty-seven golfers, up from 66 a year ago, competed in this year's tournament. Golfers completed a round of nine holes in the morning before taking lunch and finishing another nine in the afternoon for a total of 18 holes.
Dave Pawlus of Parsons was the top winner in the tourney with his handicap score of 63.

Local man wins gold at annual state games

A local man found that out this weekend after completing the Sunflower State Games in Topeka.
Andres Chavez-Martinez of Parsons competed in the annual games, which pit athletes of all ages and from all around the state in everything from baseball to dodgeball.

Erie 12s take 2nd in Girard tourney
An Erie 12-year-old baseball team finished as the runner-up at this year’s Girard Legion baseball tournament held July 15-17. The tourney was sponsored by Girard Youth Activities.
Erie began pool play on Friday with a 3-2 loss to Pittsburg and a 15-1 loss to Baxter Springs.

COFFEYVILLE — The Parsons Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-star team is on the way to state thanks to a runner-up finish in a district tourney in Coffeyville over the weekend.
The Parsons all-stars began the weekend with a 16-3 victory over Tri-Valley Friday.

Parsons 10s finish fourth at state tourney
OSWEGO — The Parsons Babe Ruth 10-year-old all-star team’s season ended in the fourth game of its state run Sunday with a 12-11 loss to Cimarron River.
The state tournament was hosted by Oswego.

Local earns honor
Jade Lambkins, a 2009 Labette County High School graduate, was recently honored by the Great Lakes Valley Conference as part of its Academic All-Conference team.
Lambkins, a student and basketball player at Rockhurst University, received the honor for being one of 275 student-athletes in the GLVC to achieve a 3.3 GPA or better in the 2010-11 school year.
Lambkins is the daughter of Melissa Perez and Gregory Lambkins.

The Parsons Babe Ruth all-star team advanced to the 12-year-old state tourney, which began Friday with a game against Belle Plaine, thanks to a runner-up finish at the Babe Ruth district tourney hosted by Independence.

Kids’ fishing derby to honor KDWP employee
Participants at the third annual Parsons Kids’ Fishing Derby on Aug. 6 at Tolen Creek Park will honor a former Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks employee and volunteer for his years of service and dedication to making the outdoors more accessible to children.

Round of 56 wins A Flight at 2011 Shaun Hill Golf Classic
The Parsons Golf Club hosted the 2011 Shaun Hill Golf Classic Saturday. This year, teams were split into a morning and afternoon session.
A total of 36 teams competed in the annual golf tournament.

Parsons 10-year-olds advance to state tournament
The Parsons 10-year-old all-star baseball team punched its ticket to the state tournament Sunday with a 13-3 victory over Independence in Coffeyville in the final game of the 10-year-old District 5 tournament.
