CLASS 2A STATE: Indians set for state tournament

OSWEGO — The turning point of the season came at Girard.
The Oswego High School boys basketball team was trailing the Class 4A Trojans by nine points in the second half.
Instead of accepting defeat in a hostile environment, the Indians rallied for an upset victory.
With that, the Indians began a five-game winning streak.

PHS spring teams picked at bottom of preseason polls

PITTSBURG — The Parsons High School baseball and softball teams didn’t get much love from the league’s coaches.
Both squads from PHS were picked at the bottom of their respective preseason coaches poll. The polls were released on Monday during the third annual preseason SEK League coaches and media luncheon presented by The Ticket — 99.1 ESPN Radio and Watco Companies.

The Labette County Grizzlies are one of them.

IOLA — The Chetopa High School boys basketball team’s bid for state came up just short.
Crest defeated Chetopa 43-34 on Saturday night in the championship game of the Class 1A Sub-State at Allen County Community College.

Cherryvale girls fall short in title game
PITTSBURG — Cherryvale’s bid for state fell one win short. Caney Valley defeated Cherryvale 44-33 in the girls championship game of the Colgan Class 3A Sub-State on Saturday night.

Oswego wins sub-state title
ARMA — The Oswego Indians are state bound.
Oswego’s boys basketball team defeated West Elk 48-35 in the championship game of the Northeast-Arma Class 2A Sub-State on Saturday night.
With the win, the Indians are moving on to the Class 2A State Tournament, which begins Wednesday in Manhattan.

Season ends for LCC basketball
Jonathan Raney called it a disappointing end.
Raney’s Labette Community College men’s basketball team saw the season end on Saturday with a 54-50 loss to Cloud County in the first round of the Region VI Tournament.
As the higher seed, the Cardinals got to host in the first round. It didn’t matter. Cloud County escaped town with a close win, and advanced in the postseason.

IOLA — The Chetopa Hornets pulled ahead for good in the fourth quarter of a back-and-fourth 1A sub-state high school basketball game Friday night against South Coffey County at Allen County Community College.

Oswego’s run ends
ARMA — The Oswego Lady Indians fell one win short of a 2A sub-state championship appearance in Arma as they lost to Pleasanton Friday night.
Oswego pulled ahead by the end of a low-scoring first quarter 6-5, but Pleasanton scored 19 points in the second and took a 24-12 lead into the break. Oswego scored just two points in the third. The Indians scored 22 points in the final period, but Pleasanton scored 26 that quarter for a 61-36 win.

PITTSBURG — The Cherryvale Lady Chargers will play in the 3A sub-state championship game tonight at Pittsburg Colgan after beating Erie 61-58 Friday night.

LCC basketball teams begin region tourney Saturday
The postseason has arrived for the Labette Community College basketball teams.
The 2013 Region VI Tournament begins on Saturday.
Labette's men will host Cloud County tonight at 7 p.m. The Cardinals are 16-14 and Cloud is 14-16. The higher seed hosts in the first round. The Cards finished fourth in the East, while Cloud was sixth in the West.
Labette's women (12-18) will play at Butler (24-6) at 5:30 p.m.

INDEPENDENCE — An inability to get defensive stops at key moments was too much to overcome for the Labette County Grizzlies.
Independence shot extremely well from the field and knocked off Labette County 63-46 on Thursday night in a semifinal contest of the Independence Class 4A Sub-State tournament.

St. Paul boys advance, Chetopa girls fall
UDALL — The St. Paul High School boys defeated Flinthills 57-28 here Thursday night in the sub-state tournament.
St. Paul struggled in the opening quarter, but three field goals by Paul Schibi and a timely three and another field goal from Anthony Diskin gave St. Paul a 15-14 edge.

Cherryvale boys fall to Caney Valley
PITTSBURG — The Cherryvale Charger boys lost to Caney Valley 59-44 Thursday night in sub-state action, ending the season for the Chargers.
The Chargers (9-11) had an early advantage over Caney with an 11-7 lead after the first quarter. Caney recovered quickly in the second quarter to gain the upper hand and never relinquished it the rest of the game.

Season ends for Erie boys
PITTSBURG — The Erie Red Devils were behind for three quarters Thursday night against the Riverton Rams, and their fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short.
The 54-43 loss in the Colgan Class 3A sub-state tournament ends Erie’s season.
Riverton roared to a 20-8 lead after one quarter.
The Rams built on that lead and started the third quarter with a 32-16 lead.
