New PHS head coaches holding camp in July
Anthony Houk and Erik Lyons will now be leading the Parsons High School basketball programs.
And the new head coaches of the Vikings and Lady Vikings will be holding a local hoops camp from July 8-11 at Parsons High School.

Trotnic signs with Bethel
Damon Trotnic of Oswego recently signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Bethel College. A 2010 graduate of Oswego High School, Trotnic was a four-year starter for the Indians and scored more than 1,000 points during his high school career. Dolphins begin season with home invite
The Parsons Dolphins Swim Team began the summer season over the weekend with the Taran Sack Invitational.
The Dolphins took second place in the team standings at Parsons Municipal Pool. Dolphins’ President Misty Burke said there are approximately 50 kids on the team this summer, and 34 competed at this past weekend’s meet. The VFW Diamondbacks defeated the Erie Red Devils 9-5 at Winway Park on Monday in the 9-10 Babe Ruth League.
VFW had consistent hitting and pitching to pull out the win. The Diamondbacks' pitchers Luke Forbes and Mark Bogner combined for 10 strikeouts.
The Red Devils' two pitchers, Graham and Dillinger, did better with 12 strikeouts between them (eight and four, respectively).

Team goes 1-3 over weekend
The Parsons Bleacher Gear/KMH Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old baseball team split two games against Humboldt on Friday before dropping two games to Riverton on Sunday.
In game one at Humboldt, Klay Weaver struck out eight batters while holding Humboldt to two runs. Joey Reeves took the mound for the sixth inning, and Parsons won 10-2.
Austin Ryan had three singles in the first game, and Kyle O’Connor and Blake Palmer both had a double apiece.

Commentary: Class 4A split will have big impact locally

Like it or not, the landscape of high school sports in the state is changing.
After months of debate and speculation, the proposal to split Class 4A into two divisions has passed.
The classification’s schools voted 42-22 in favor of the split, which creates two divisions for postseason play in Class 4A for the major sports.
There will now be separate state tournaments — Class 4A Division I, and Class 4A D...

Parsons tennis lessons

Class 4A will be split into two divisions

Class 4A will now have two divisions for the major sports.
According to a press release issued by the Kansas State High School Activities Association on Tuesday, the proposal to split up Class 4A into two divisions has passed.
There are 64 Class 4A schools in the state, and the proposal needed 33 votes to pass. The voting has been completed, and 42 schools voted for the change, while 22 voted against it. P...

More boats needed for Take an Airman Fishing tourney

On that Saturday, the local American Bass Anglers organization is holding the annual Take an Airman Fishing tournament.

Smith holds 20th hoops camp

ALTAMONT — For the 20th summer in-a-row, Brad Smith presided over the Labette County Grizzly Basketball Camp.
The annual camp is for kids going into grades 1-through-12, and this year’s event was held all week at LCHS in Altamont.
Smith said 160 kids attended the camp this week, with learning the fundamentals of the game as the main focus.

Indians dominate all-Three Rivers League baseball team
St. Paul High School had four players listed on the first team of the 2013 All-Three Rivers League Baseball Team.
St. Paul’s Jake O’Brien, Riley O’Brien, Anthony Diskin, and Paul Schibi were all listed as first team all-league selections.
The two O’Briens and Diskin were unanimous selections.
All four Indians are seniors.

State track: Oswego athletes compete at state track meet
WICHITA — Oswego’s David Kirkpatrick took 12th place in the prelims of the Class 2A boys 100-meter dash on Saturday at the 2013 Kansas State Track Meet. Kirkpatrick finished in 11.67 and did not advance to the finals. Kirkpatrick is a junior and will have another shot next year. Kirkpatrick finished 12th in the prelims of the 200 on Friday (24.15).
