Grizzlies take down Vikings

Labette County took advantage of the big play time and time again in a 49-8 victory over Parsons at a packed Marvel Park stadium on Friday night in a showdown of county rivals.
The Grizzlies spoiled the Vikings’ Homecoming celebration in the process. And it was the big play that propelled LCHS to victory. Six of the Grizzlies’ touchdowns came on plays of more than 30 yards.

Diskin leads Indians in win
ST. PAUL — St. Paul High School defeated Three Rivers League opponent Colony-Crest here 50-40 Friday night.
St. Paul Coach Doug Tuck said the Indian offensive line performed well all night and opened holes. Running backs also blocked well for the Indians, who are now 3-0 overall.
“We played well at times (on defense),” Tuck said. “Defensively, we did what we had to do.”

Cassell passes way to victory
UNIONTOWN — A fumble recovery in the endzone after time expired gave Chetopa High School a 58-56 win here over Uniontown.
Uniontown had scored a touchdown with 1:21 left in the game on a 25-yard pass from Wiley to Reed to go ahead 56-52. The kickoff return left Chetopa 52 yards away from a win.

LCHS tennis fares well at tourneys
The Labette County High School girls tennis team took third place at Fort Scott on Tuesday.
Patricia Stevenson took third in number-two singles, Caitlin Closs and Jackie Wertz placed third at number-one doubles, and Candance Carr and Haley Page were third in number-two doubles.
On Thursday, Paige Smith’s third place finish at number-one singles led the way for the Grizzlies at Pittsburg’s invite. Sami Brown was second at number-two singles. ...

PHS volleyball earns league wins, LCHS falls to Chanute
FORT SCOTT — The Parsons High School volleyball team start off league play on a high note.
The Vikings swept a pair of matches on Thursday night at Fort Scott. The Vikings defeated Coffeyville 25-10, 25-10 and then got past the host Tigers 26-24, 25-19.
The Vikings rallied to beat Fort Scott. In the second set, Parsons scored 11 of the last 13 points to get the win. Fort Scott led 24-23 in the first set.

Grizzlies headed to Rim Rock

ALTAMONT — The Labette County High School cross country team will compete against some of the best runners from the entire Midwest at today’s Rim Rock Farm Classic.
The event is held outside of Lawrence. Rim Rock Farm is home to the KU cross country team and is regarded as one of the toughest courses in the nation.

Travis Burk has a homecoming date on Friday night — with the Humboldt Cubs.
Oswego’s head football coach spent three seasons guiding the Cubs. He had success there, too.
