Labette Community College sophomore Lacie Cook was recognized Tuesday by the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association for her efforts in her freshman campaign at LCC with the 2011 Golden Shoe Award.
The NFCA Golden Shoe Award is presented annually to the top base stealer from an NFCA member institution in all divisions of NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, Cal JC, NWAACC and high school, according to a press release from the NFCA.

Senior golf tour stops in Parsons
Just under a month removed from its last trip to Parsons, the SEK Senior Tour returned Thursday morning and afternoon with 18 holes of golf at the Parsons Golf Club.
The tour had previously stopped in Parsons on July 21 at the Katy Golf Club.
Forty-five golfers competed in Thursday’s tournament.
The round of 18 holes was split by a lunch in the middle of the day. After beginning around 9:30 a.m., the round was in the books at 3:30 p.m.

Youth Classic set for mid-October
ST. PAUL — Osage Hills Country Club will host the third annual Youth Outdoor Classic at the Neosho Wildlife Area on Oct. 15.
The format for this year’s classic will be slightly changed, with this year including other outdoor hunting activities such as turkey hunting, trapping and archery.
The event is free and open to anyone, with ages 8 to 15 preferred. The event will provide expert instruction on several hunting techniques.

Local bowling leagues forming
The 2011-12 bowling season is near.
The Senior Citizen League will begin the season at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 23 at Parsons Bowl.
Most of the leagues will likely start the following week. A schedule for what days and times those teams will meet throughout the season is listed below.

Dolphins win division title
Eighty percent of the Parsons Dolphins Swim Team’s races were good for personal bests over the weekend at the Tri-State Conference B Division Championships in Siloam Springs, Ark.
Those low times helped Parsons capture the B Division title in the two-day competition.
The Dolphins also finished with a top individual. That honor went to swimmer Hadleigh Palmer, who won high points in the 13-14-year- old girls division.

Organizers postpone John Daley Open
The 2011 John Daley Open Tennis Tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday has been postponed until Aug. 12-13.
The tournament will still take place at the Forest Park tennis courts.
Youth boys will be scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on Aug. 12, while girls will begin at 9 a.m.
Adult men will play at 8 a.m. followed by adult women at 9 a.m. on Aug. 13.
The fee to enter is $8 per event and should be paid by noon Aug. 11.

OSWEGO — Night two of the 2011 Labette County Fair Rodeo is now in the books, and after another round of competitors having their shot, not much changed atop the leaderboard.
Only Marcus Kimberling of Aurora, Mo., was able to unseat a best time or score from Wednesday’s opening night with his 85 points scored in the bull riding event.

The Kansas Ballerz, made up of Southeast Kansas eighth-graders, took second place in the 2011 Sunflower State games in Topeka over the weekend after finishing the eighth-grade girls A bracket at 4-1.

OSWEGO — American Cowboy Rodeo Association and International Professional Rodeo Association riders and ropers invaded here Wednesday evening for the opening night of the 2011 Labette County Fair Rodeo.

Parsons 14s swept at state
The Parsons Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-stars began play in the state tournament at Garden City on Friday with an 8-7 loss to Cimarron River.
Parsons led 4-0 after two innings and added to the lead with another run in the fourth, but Cimarron began chipping away in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to cut a 7-0 lead to 7-2.

SEK Senior Tour at Katy
The SEK Senior Tour took its annual stop at the Katy Golf Club Thursday afternoon for the 2011 Katy Golf Course Senior Tournament.
Sixty-seven golfers, up from 66 a year ago, competed in this year's tournament. Golfers completed a round of nine holes in the morning before taking lunch and finishing another nine in the afternoon for a total of 18 holes.

An Erie 12-year-old baseball team finished as the runner-up at this year’s Girard Legion baseball tournament held July 15-17. The tourney was sponsored by Girard Youth Activities.
