CHS ready for rematch with Oklahoma school

The Green Hornets got into a shootout with Southwest Christian Academy a season ago in a 42-30 loss to the eventual Oklahoma state semifinalists.
This year, the team is hoping it doesn’t have to score as much to keep up.

Parsons MS volleyball takes on Chanute
The Parsons Middle School volleyball team traveled to Chanute Thursday night. The seventh-grade B team lost the first set 25-16 before battling back and losing a close second set 25-23.
In the seventh-grade A game, Parsons fell 25-9 partially due to missed serves. Chanute won the second set 25-16.

Erie gets revenge on Eureka, 28-26
ERIE — Erie High School avenged a season-opening beating from last year by out-hustling Eureka here Friday night.
The Red Devils won 28-26 in the season opener, coming back from an early deficit. Last year, Eureka handed Erie a 60-12 beating.
Eureka had a 12-0 lead after the first quarter and added another eight in the second to build the 20-0 halftime lead. Erie came alive in the second half, outscoring Eureka 28-6.

Labette County tennis wins home tourney
The Labette County High School tennis team won three of four events and 12 of 16 matches overall to take first place at the LCHS Varsity Invitational tennis tournament Thursday at the Forest Park courts in Parsons.
The Grizzlies won the No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles portion of the event.

The Parsons High School freshman volleyball team traveled to Fort Scott Thursday evening for a quad and finished the night at 2-1.
Parsons earned a 22-25, 25-17, 25-20 victory over the home Tigers to start the night.

The Parsons High School junior varsity volleyball team was in action on Thursday at Independence.
The JV went 1-1.
In the opener, Parsons defeated host Independence 25-23, 25-22.

Olpe defeats Cherryvale 27-7
CHERRYVALE — Cherryvale scored early against Olpe here Friday night but then couldn’t get across the goal line again, falling in the season-opener 27-7 to the state-ranked team.
“We got off to a little slow start,” Cherryvale head coach Harry Hester said.

Oswego gets past Quapaw
QUAPAW, Okla. — The Oswego Indians recovered from five unanswered touchdowns on Friday night to get past Quapaw, 36-34.
Oswego scored first with 3:10 left in the first quarter on the first of four Nick Billingsly touchdown runs. Quapaw answered that TD with one of its own with just more than a minute left in the quarter.

St. Paul defeats West Elk
HOWARD — St. Paul High School had first-game jitters against West Elk here Friday night, but the Indians settled in for the second half and held on for a 22-8 win.
“We came out sluggish in the first half, particularly the first quarter,” St. Paul head coach Doug Tuck said.
The Indians gave West Elk too many chances on offense early in the game, but the Indian defense tightened up when it needed to, keeping West Elk out of the end zone.

CNC Lanes in Erie will have its 10th annual Senior Tournament Sept. 10-11 and Sept. 17-18.
The tourney is sanctioned by the USBC.
The entry fee is $13 per person per event. A prize ratio of at least one out of 10 will be awarded.
Teams will begin play at noon while singles will start at 3 p.m.
All entrants must have USBC cards. No entry will be refunded. Competitors need not be a member of a senior league.

Grizzlies take top two spots in home CC meet

The Labette County High School varsity boys cross country team decided to take not just the top overall spot, but the top two spots in the LCHS invitational cross country run.

Thirteen anglers took to the waters of Big Hill Lake this weekend as District 58 of the American Bass Anglers, Southeast Kansas District held its two-day regional championship tournament for the 2011 season.

CHANUTE — The Labette County High School tennis team started the season on a solid note Thursday with a second-place finish in an invitational tournament in Chanute.
The Grizzlies were joined by Columbus, Iola, Neodesha and host Chanute in a five-team tournament.
