Repeat champs at SEK cross country meet a rare feat

For the first time since 1982, the individual champions at the SEK League cross country meet were repeat winners.
Drew Baum of Labette County and Katren Rienbolt of Fort Scott were both able to win back-to-back league titles last Thursday at this year’s league meet. Both Baum and Rienbolt were 2011’s champions, as well.

Grizzlies compete at state golf tourney
HESSTON — The inaugural season of girls golf at Labette County High School ended with a trip to the state tournament.
The Grizzlies finished the 2012 season, the first in school history, on Monday at the Class 4A State Golf Tournament at Hesston Golf Park.

Kipp earns medal at state tennis tourney

EMPORIA — Malina Kipp’s prep tennis career ended with the state’s best.
The Parsons High School senior finished up play at the Class 4A State Tennis Tournament at Emporia High School on Monday. And when all was said and done, Kipp earned a medal with a 12th place finish in the singles bracket.

Grizzlies drop district opener to Coffeyville
ALTAMONT — Visiting Coffeyville defeated Labette County 55-13 on Friday in the first night of district football action.
The loss puts the Grizzlies at 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the district.
The Grizzlies scored in the first quarter on a 35-yard pass from Dontae Johnson to Taylor Stice. Cole Reazin kicked the PAT.
Labette’s final score came in the second quarter when Johnson passed to Blake Palmer for a 45-yard touchdown. The PAT failed.

Vikings take third at Neodesha tourney
NEODESHA — The Parsons High School volleyball team finished the regular season on a positive note by taking third place at the Neodesha Tournament on Saturday.
The Vikings went 4-2 on the day at the tourney.

GARNETT — The Labette County High School volleyball team finished fourth at the Anderson County Tournament on Saturday.
It was the final action of the regular season before sub-state play arrives this weekend.
Labette County defeated Prairie View 25-14, 15-25, 25-14. Next, Fort Scott beat LCHS 25-19, 17-25, 25-19. Next, the Grizzlies defeated host Anderson County 25-21, 20-25, 25-17.

St. Paul remains perfect
YATES CENTER — The St. Paul Indians struggled to put points on the board against the winless Yates Center Wildcats on Friday night, but they pulled away in the third quarter for a lopsided win.
The Indians improved to 6-0 in the 46-6 drubbing in the 8-Man, District 2 game.

Caney Valley defeats Cherryvale
CANEY — The Cherryvale Chargers struggled on the road in their first Class 3A, District 7 game against the Caney Valley Bullpups Friday night, failing to get on the scoreboard in a 38-point shutout.
The Bullpups scored on big running plays in the first and third quarter. Caney scored twice in the first quarter, including an 81-yard run and three more times in the third, including runs of 55 and 54 yards.

Raiders use big second half to keep Vikings winless

FRONTENAC — When a close first half came to an end, the first victory of the season appeared to be within reach for the Parsons High School football team.

ALTAMONT — Labette County defeated Parsons in two-straight sets in high school volleyball action on Thursday. The Grizzlies defeated the Vikings 25-14, 25-18.
