Grizzlies grind out win
ALTAMONT — Labette County High School’s boys basketball team eeked out a 56-51 win here Friday night.
The 3-1 Grizzlies will host Independence on Tuesday, the last game before the Christmas break for LCHS.
LCHS senior Dontae Johnson scored 20 points to pace the Grizzlies. Lee Reliford and Zack Stewart each had 13 points.

Oswego sweeps Erie
OSWEGO — Oswego High School’s girls basketball team defeated Erie here Friday 47-40.
Oswego stats weren’t available.
Bret McGuire scored 18 points for Erie and Kailey Cleaver added 10 the the Lady Red Devils. McGuire also grabbed four rebounds. Cleaver had two rebounds and six steals on the night.

CANEY — Cherryvale’s Lady Chargers fell short here Friday night in their offensive effort and lost 58-42 to Caney Valley.

St. Paul boys, girls defeat Altoona-Midway
ST. PAUL — Both of the St. Paul High School varsity basketball teams held their opponents to 27 points Friday night to collect two blowout wins.
The St. Paul boys held the Altoona-Midway Jets to just three first-quarter points. Meanwhile, the Indians scored just two points shy of the Jets’ total for the game in the opening quarter. By halftime, the Indians were up 43-10. They cruised to a 70-27 win.

Hays among Emporia State tennis recruits
EMPORIA — Payton Hays of Parsons is among the five players recently signed by Emporia State University to play tennis.
Head coach John Cayton has announced the signing of five players. Austin David and Hays will join the men for the 2013-14 season, while Samantha Aleman, Amy Fugit and Tawni Griffey will join the women's team.

BURLINGTON — The Labette County High School wrestling team competed in a triple dual at Burlington on Tuesday.
Labette County defeated Eureka 42-30. Burlington defeated LCHS 36-30 and Fredonia topped Labette County 48-26.

OSWEGO — A fourth-quarter surge allowed the Chetopa High School boys basketball team to defeat Oswego here Tuesday night 56-47.

CARL JUNCTION — Wrestlers from Cherryvale and Labette County ran into some tough competition at the Carl Junction (Mo.) Classic on Saturday.

DODGE CITY — Dodge City held on late for a 72-65 win in overtime over the Labette Community College men’s basketball team on Saturday. The host Conquistadors outscored the Cardinals 10-3 in the extra session. Labette had rallied from six down with under two minutes to play to force overtime.
