Local bowling leagues forming
The 2011-12 bowling season is near.
The Senior Citizen League will begin the season at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 23 at Parsons Bowl.
Most of the leagues will likely start the following week. A schedule for what days and times those teams will meet throughout the season is listed below.
All leagues are in need of bowlers and teams. Anyone wanting to join a team or who has a team should call Parsons Bowl at 423-0003.

Dolphins win division title
Eighty percent of the Parsons Dolphins Swim Team’s races were good for personal bests over the weekend at the Tri-State Conference B Division Championships in Siloam Springs, Ark.
Those low times helped Parsons capture the B Division title in the two-day competition.
The Dolphins also finished with a top individual. That honor went to swimmer Hadleigh Palmer, who won high points in the 13-14-year- old girls division.

Organizers postpone John Daley Open
The 2011 John Daley Open Tennis Tournament scheduled for Friday and Saturday has been postponed until Aug. 12-13.
The tournament will still take place at the Forest Park tennis courts.
Youth boys will be scheduled to start at 8 a.m. on Aug. 12, while girls will begin at 9 a.m.
Adult men will play at 8 a.m. followed by adult women at 9 a.m. on Aug. 13.
The fee to enter is $8 per event and should be paid by noon Aug. 11.

2011 Labette County Fair Rodeo concludes

OSWEGO — Night two of the 2011 Labette County Fair Rodeo is now in the books, and after another round of competitors having their shot, not much changed atop the leaderboard.
Only Marcus Kimberling of Aurora, Mo., was able to unseat a best time or score from Wednesday’s opening night with his 85 points scored in the bull riding event.

Kansas Ballerz take second at Sunflower games
The Kansas Ballerz, made up of Southeast Kansas eighth-graders, took second place in the 2011 Sunflower State games in Topeka over the weekend after finishing the eighth-grade girls A bracket at 4-1.
The Ballerz defeated Anderson County, the Lady Prospects, the Kansas Elite team out of Salina and the Kansas Hoopsters out of Kansas City.

Labette County Fair Rodeo begins

OSWEGO — American Cowboy Rodeo Association and International Professional Rodeo Association riders and ropers invaded here Wednesday evening for the opening night of the 2011 Labette County Fair Rodeo.
The two-night rodeo is part of the 100th edition of the annual fair.

The Parsons Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-stars began play in the state tournament at Garden City on Friday with an 8-7 loss to Cimarron River.
Parsons led 4-0 after two innings and added to the lead with another run in the fourth, but Cimarron began chipping away in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to cut a 7-0 lead to 7-2.

SEK Senior Tour at Katy
The SEK Senior Tour took its annual stop at the Katy Golf Club Thursday afternoon for the 2011 Katy Golf Course Senior Tournament.
Sixty-seven golfers, up from 66 a year ago, competed in this year's tournament. Golfers completed a round of nine holes in the morning before taking lunch and finishing another nine in the afternoon for a total of 18 holes.
Dave Pawlus of Parsons was the top winner in the tourney with his handicap score of 63.

An Erie 12-year-old baseball team finished as the runner-up at this year’s Girard Legion baseball tournament held July 15-17. The tourney was sponsored by Girard Youth Activities.

COFFEYVILLE — The Parsons Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-star team is on the way to state thanks to a runner-up finish in a district tourney in Coffeyville over the weekend.

Parsons 10s finish fourth at state tourney
OSWEGO — The Parsons Babe Ruth 10-year-old all-star team’s season ended in the fourth game of its state run Sunday with a 12-11 loss to Cimarron River.
The state tournament was hosted by Oswego.

The Parsons Dolphins traveled to Lamar, Mo., over the weekend for the Lamar Invitational Swim Meet.

Local earns honor
Jade Lambkins, a 2009 Labette County High School graduate, was recently honored by the Great Lakes Valley Conference as part of its Academic All-Conference team.
Lambkins, a student and basketball player at Rockhurst University, received the honor for being one of 275 student-athletes in the GLVC to achieve a 3.3 GPA or better in the 2010-11 school year.
Lambkins is the daughter of Melissa Perez and Gregory Lambkins.
