Grizzlies win fresh/soph game with Chanute
The Labette County freshman/sophomore football team mounted an exciting come-from-behind 39-34 victory over Chanute on Monday at Lucas Field.
Down 26-6 in the second quarter, the Grizzlies regrouped at halftime and started an inspired comeback. Led by Parker Grant’s four touchdowns on the ground, the Grizzlies chipped away at the lead and rallied the defense to limit Chanute’s offense in the second half.

Parsons football notes: Vikings make strides in Week Two

Despite a 49-0 loss to Coffeyville on Friday, there were some positives for the Parsons High School football team.
“The kids played better and they competed hard,” PHS Coach David Pitts said.
The Vikings continued to play hard on every possession, even when the score was getting out of hand.

CHANUTE — Gaining valuable experience along the way, golfers from Parsons and Labette County High Schools competed at the Chanute Invitational on a near perfect Monday at Quarry Stone Golf Course. There were 14 schools represented at Monday’s invite in Chanute.
Labette County freshman Erica Gartner and Parsons senior Alison Hudson tied for 14th place at the tourney with identical scores of 53.

Parsons hosts annual cross country invite on Thursday at Big Hill

Big Hill Lake will be the site for the annual Parsons Invitational Cross Country Meet on Thursday outside of Cherryvale.
There will be at least 22 schools competing at the invite, PHS Coach Mike Krull said.
Krull said the annual event is one he, and many other coaches and runners in the area, enjoy.

The team was originally scheduled to take on Altoona-Midway in Week Three. But Altoona decided to field only a JV football team this year. The Jets have struggled with low numbers, and with lopsided losses, for the last several years at the varsity level.

LCC volleyball falls at Hesston
The Labette Community College volleyball team is still looking for its first victory of the season.
Hesston defeated LCC 25-18, 26-24, 25-22 on Friday night. No stats were available to the Sun. The Cardinals are at Northeastern Oklahoma tonight in Miami.

Erie native reflects on Southern’s ‘72 title

Forty years ago Missouri Southern State University won a national title in football.
Bill Ruble of Erie was there — every step of the way.
Ruble was a freshman offensive tackle that year for the Lions, who won the NAIA Division II national title in 1972.

CHANUTE — Chanute High School defeated the visiting Labette County Grizzlies here Friday night 42-0.

Big plays result in St. Paul win
CHETOPA — A solid effort on offense and defense allowed St. Paul to break open some long runs Friday night against Chetopa. St. Paul won 54-30.
With the win, St. Paul improves to 2-0 on the year. Next week, the Indians are off because their scheduled opponent had to cancel its season. The next game will be a home game against Crest on Sept. 21.

Oswego rushing attack downs Eureka
OSWEGO — The Oswego Indians climbed to 2-0 Friday night with a win against Eureka by using a dominating ground game made possible by a strong performance from the offensive line.

CHERRYVALE — The Cherryvale Chargers had another rough night Friday, losing their second game of the season to the Commerce, Okla., Tigers 49-0.
The Tigers struck twice in the first quarter before scoring four touchdowns in the second and another in the fourth.

GIRARD — The Parsons High School cross country team competed at the Girard Invitational on a steamy Thursday at the Crawford County Fairgrounds.
