Labette dominates wrestling regional, Cards advance to nationals

The road to a repeat has begun.
The Labette Community College wrestling team dominated the field in taking first place at the 2013 NJCAA West/Central District Regional Tournament at Pratt on Saturday.
The all-day meet is the qualifier for the national tournament. The defending national champs had all 10 of their wrestlers qualify for the national tournament, a good sign that a repeat is possible.

The Labette Cardinals were unable to get it done in crunch time, and the Independence Pirates held on late for an 82-81 win on Saturday in Jayhawk East men’s basketball action.
The back and forth nail-biter went down to the wire, but the host Cardinals were unable to score on their final three chances in the final seconds, and the Pirates escaped with a road victory.

Altamont Lady Eagles finish perfect season
The Altamont Middle School Lady Eagles completed a perfect 16-0 season by defeating Edna in the title game of the USD 506 Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles beat Bartlett 61-12 in the first round. Tristan Gegg scored 23 points, and had nine steals and seven assists. Reid Hentzen added 16 points and had four steals, while Maria Payne had eight points.
In the title game, Altamont beat Edna 46-24.

Chargers, Red Devils fare well at Tri-Valley League tourney
EUREKA — The Cherryvale and Erie High School wrestling teams had several individuals place at the Tri-Valley League Wrestling Championships over the weekend.
Caney Valley was the team champion. Cherryvale was second in the team standings, with Fredonia third. Burlington, Eureka and Erie rounded out the field.

Free throws lead Indy women past LCC

It’s hard to make a comeback when the opposing team is continually at the foul line.
This was evident on Saturday, as the Labette Community College women’s basketball team battled Independence.
The visiting Lady Pirates made 14 of 25 free throws in the second half to hold off the Lady Cardinals in a 67-52 win over LCC.

McClenning, Mildfelt earn titles at Men's City bowling tourney
The Men’s City Bowling Tournament finished up this past weekend.
The winning team was Thomas Implement, with a score of 3374 holding up.
Last week’s top score in singles held up, as Mitch McClenning’s 782 was good for first place. Tom Mildfelt won the coveted Scratch All Events with 2013 and Curtis Wolgamott won the Handicap All Events with 2164.
The doubles winners were Curtis Wolgamott and Larry Gatewood, who rolled a 1464.

Morgan Ginn of Arlington, Kentucky has signed to play softball for Labette Community College. A pitcher, Morgan is the daughter of Scott and Kimberly Ginn. Her family has ties to Parsons. Morgan said she’s wanted to be a college softball pitcher since she was eight-years-old.

ERIE — The Cherryvale High School girls basketball team couldn’t recover from a sputtering start on Friday night, and the Erie girls took advantage, getting a 55-45 homecoming win.

OSWEGO — The Oswego Indians fell behind early in a Three Rivers League high school basketball game on Friday night and lost to Crest of Colony 57-36.

BUFFALO — The St. Paul Indians pretty much wrapped up its win against Altoona-Midway with a big second quarter Friday night in a Three-Rivers League high school basketball matchup.
The Indians led the Jets 12-5 after the first quarter, but they outscored Altoona 20-4 in the second. St. Paul cruised to the 58-24 win in the second half.

Hornets sting Tyro
CHETOPA — Chetopa High School pounded Tyro Christian 72-31 here Friday night in a high school basketball contest.
Tyro Christian’s team has been hammered by illness, so Chetopa’s junior varsity played most of the game Friday.

COLUMBUS — Labette County High School’s boys crushed Columbus 66-38 here Friday night in a non-league contest.
The LCHS girls squeaked by Columbus 42-40.

CHANUTE — Three road games against the league’s top three teams.
That’s what the Parsons High School girls basketball team faces to end the regular season.
And unfortunately for the Lady Vikings, that difficult three-game stretch didn’t start off very well.
