The Labette Community College softball team got a big-time win Tuesday in a doubleheader with a ranked opponent.

The Parsons Middle School Vikings traveled to Columbus for their last game of the basketball season last Thursday and came home with four victories.

Parsons boys, girls; LCHS girls set to host substate openers
The Parsons High School basketball teams will host Baxter High School Monday evening in the first round of substate basketball.
The opening round of substate is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday next week — with girls playing on Monday and boys on Tuesday.
However, since Parsons will host Baxter in both games, the Vikings are allowed to schedule the games on the same day.

NEODESHA — The Cherryvale Chargers fell behind early and never caught up, falling to Neodesha 68-54 Tuesday night.
The Blue Streaks scored 20 points in the opening quarter and held the Chargers to 12. By halftime, it was 39-25 Neodesha.

"We really played well together," LCHS boys coach Brad Smith said. "We knew we were in for a battle."

CHETOPA — The St. Paul Indians got a 10-point win against rival Chetopa on Tuesday night in a Three Rivers League high school basketball game.
St. Paul led by just three points by the end of the first quarter, but the Indians scored 20 points in the second to take a 31-15 lead into halftime. St. Paul won 53-43.

Parsons High School became the first team to defeat the Independence Bulldogs in Southeast Kansas League play Tuesday evening to pull into a tie for first in SEK play with one game left.

The Kansas Mobile Homes team leads the Parsons City Women's Bowling Tournament through one week of action.
The team is made up of Sue Baldwin, Kathy Stewart, Carole Strathe, Sharon Smith and Sharon Tridle. The team posted a 3,583 over the weekend at the Parsons Bowl.

PWC youth wrestler wins state title
The Parsons Wrestling Club traveled to Ottawa over the weekend for a pair of tourneys.
Saturday, the team competed in the Ottawa Mat Masters Open. Over 800 wrestlers from 82 teams competed in the tourney.
Parsons had 10 wrestlers entered in the tourney and nine of those placed.
Sunday, PWC sent two wrestlers to the Kansas six and under championships.
The tourney is separate from the older wrestler's championship which will take place in March....

The Parsons High School wrestling team placed 12th out of 15 teams in the Fort Scott High School-hosted regional wrestling tourney over the weekend. Cardinals drop two to Cowley in Saturday action
The Labette Community College basketball teams dropped a pair of games to Cowley Community College over the weekend.
The LCC men dropped to 16-10 on the season with a 66-58 loss to the Tigers. The loss moves LCC to 6-8 overall in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Eastern Division.
The Labette women dropped their fourth in a row in a 79-59 game with CCC.
The Lady Cardinals trailed 39-30 at the break on the way to the defeat.
Vikings' Thatcher Murdock heading back to state
Parsons High School’s Thatcher Murdock will be making a trip to the state wrestling tourney for the second year in a row thanks to his showing at the Fort Scott regional tourney over the weekend.
Murdock (32-5) will take on Slade Sare (28-12) of Abilene in the first round of the state tourney in the 132-pound bracket. He was the only Viking to qualify for the state tourney this year.

The Labette Community College baseball team was a good series out of fourth in the league last year.
They’re hoping to bridge the gap in 2012.
LCC baseball finished the 2012 season with an 18-27 record overall and a 15-21 mark in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.
The KJCCC was tightly packed a season ago. After first-place Cowley and Neosho, the remaining eight teams fought for position.
Labette sweeps Illinois Central to open year 2-0
The Labette Community College baseball team opened the season with a pair of wins over Illinois Central College on Sunday at the LCC baseball diamond.
Labette grabbed a 10-0 win in the first game and capped the day off with a 4-1 victory.
The Redbirds finished the opener with nine hits and got a stellar performance out of pitcher Kacy Cook, who needed just 51 pitches in six innings of play.

5K run/2K walk coming to Parsons in March
The St. Patrick’s 5K run/2K walk will take place at 9 a.m. on March 17 at 1807 Stevens Avenue in Parsons.
The event is sponsored by the St. Patrick Catholic School council communication committee.
Age groups will be divided into 20 and under, 21-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50 and over. There will be a male and female division during the event.

FORT SCOTT — Labette County High School senior Spencer Gatewood qualified for the Class 4A tournament with a third-place finish in the 285-pound division at the regional wrestling tourney here over the weekend.

Erie High School’s Rian Lahey took fourth overall Saturday in the Class 3A regional tourney hosted by Eureka.
Lahey defeated Trevor Breshears of Burlington via 26-11 tech fall in the consolation semi-finals of the 138-pound bracket to qualify.
