Season ends for LCC basketball
Jonathan Raney called it a disappointing end.
Raney’s Labette Community College men’s basketball team saw the season end on Saturday with a 54-50 loss to Cloud County in the first round of the Region VI Tournament.
As the higher seed, the Cardinals got to host in the first round. It didn’t matter. Cloud County escaped town with a close win, and advanced in the postseason.
“It was a very disappointing ending to the season,” Raney said.

Web update: Labette County girls advance to state
The Labette County High School girls basketball team defeated Chanute 46-37 on Saturday night in the championship game of the Independence 4A sub-state.
With the win, the Grizzlies advance to next week's state tournament in Salina.
In the boys title game, Independence defeated Coffeyville.

INDEPENDENCE — To Kristi Snider, it’s been way too long since her Labette County girls basketball team has played in a sub-state title game.
The wait is now over.
The Lady Grizzlies are one win away from a state berth.
Labette County knocked off Towanda-Circle 53-38 on Friday night in a semifinal contest of the Independence Class 4A Sub-State.

Chetopa moves on in 1A tourney
IOLA — The Chetopa Hornets pulled ahead for good in the fourth quarter of a back-and-fourth 1A sub-state high school basketball game Friday night against South Coffey County at Allen County Community College.

Oswego’s run ends
ARMA — The Oswego Lady Indians fell one win short of a 2A sub-state championship appearance in Arma as they lost to Pleasanton Friday night.
Oswego pulled ahead by the end of a low-scoring first quarter 6-5, but Pleasanton scored 19 points in the second and took a 24-12 lead into the break. Oswego scored just two points in the third. The Indians scored 22 points in the final period, but Pleasanton scored 26 that quarter for a 61-36 win.

Cherryvale gets by Erie
PITTSBURG — The Cherryvale Lady Chargers will play in the 3A sub-state championship game tonight at Pittsburg Colgan after beating Erie 61-58 Friday night.

LCC basketball teams begin region tourney Saturday
The postseason has arrived for the Labette Community College basketball teams.
The 2013 Region VI Tournament begins on Saturday.
Labette's men will host Cloud County tonight at 7 p.m. The Cardinals are 16-14 and Cloud is 14-16. The higher seed hosts in the first round. The Cards finished fourth in the East, while Cloud was sixth in the West.
Labette's women (12-18) will play at Butler (24-6) at 5:30 p.m.

INDEPENDENCE — An inability to get defensive stops at key moments was too much to overcome for the Labette County Grizzlies.
Independence shot extremely well from the field and knocked off Labette County 63-46 on Thursday night in a semifinal contest of the Independence Class 4A Sub-State tournament.

St. Paul boys advance, Chetopa girls fall
UDALL — The St. Paul High School boys defeated Flinthills 57-28 here Thursday night in the sub-state tournament.
St. Paul struggled in the opening quarter, but three field goals by Paul Schibi and a timely three and another field goal from Anthony Diskin gave St. Paul a 15-14 edge.
St. Paul’s defense held Flinthills scoreless in the second quarter and the Indian offense generated nine points on a balanced scoring attack.

Cherryvale boys fall to Caney Valley
PITTSBURG — The Cherryvale Charger boys lost to Caney Valley 59-44 Thursday night in sub-state action, ending the season for the Chargers.
The Chargers (9-11) had an early advantage over Caney with an 11-7 lead after the first quarter. Caney recovered quickly in the second quarter to gain the upper hand and never relinquished it the rest of the game.

Season ends for Erie boys
PITTSBURG — The Erie Red Devils were behind for three quarters Thursday night against the Riverton Rams, and their fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short.
The 54-43 loss in the Colgan Class 3A sub-state tournament ends Erie’s season.
Riverton roared to a 20-8 lead after one quarter.
The Rams built on that lead and started the third quarter with a 32-16 lead.
Erie came back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Riverton, but it wasn’t enough....

PHS boys seasons stats: Beachner led Vikings
The Parsons High School boys basketball team went 3-18 in 2012-13. The season ended with Monday’s loss to Independence.
The Vikings had wins over Baxter Springs, Frontenac and Chanute, which was the team’s lone SEK League victory.
Senior guard Craig Beachner led the team in scoring with 229 points scored in the 21 games, good for a 10.9 points per game average. Beachner hit 33 three-pointers, a team-high. He also had a team-high 26 assists.

Oswego girls top Uniontown
ARMA — Oswego High School’s girls basketball team practiced a stingy defense that held Uniontown nearly scoreless in the first quarter. The Lady Indians proved too much in the sub-state tournament game and advanced with a 59-44 win.
Kaelyn Yeoman paced Oswego’s offense in the first quarter with six points, while Jaymie Nesbitt hit a three-pointer. Uniontown scored only two points in the opening quarter.

The Fourth Annual Mo-Kan Wrestling Classic will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Labette Community College gymnasium.
The event features top senior wrestlers from Kansas going up against top seniors from Missouri. The Kansas team, featuring lots of local talent, will look to win the event for a fourth-straight year. Admission is $5 at the door.

As far as the Colgan 3A Sub-State, Cherryvale’s boys are at Caney Valley tonight at 6 p.m.
Erie’s boys will take on Riverton tonight at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Colgan. Galena and Southeast will meet after Erie’s game, while Colgan takes on Neodesha in the first game at 4:30 p.m.

CHERRYVALE — The Cherryvale Chargers’ offense pounded the ball inside all night Wednesday to end the season for the Riverton Rams. The Lady Chargers won 76-47.
With the win, Cherryvale will play Erie at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Pittsburg’s St. Mary’s Colgan in the Class 3A sub-state tournament. Erie defeated Galena Wednesday night to advance.
