Labette coach earns 200th win
Labette Community College head coach Ryan Phillips earned his 200th career win Monday afternoon in Parsons in the second game of a doubleheader with Cottey College.
The Lady Cardinals swept Cottey 13-2 and 10-0 to improve to 36-16 overall.
Next up for the Cardinals will be a best of three Region VI matchup with Kansas City Kansas Community College (24-24) beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the LCC softball fields.

LCHS hosts JV tourney at Forest Park Monday
The Labette County High School tennis team hosted a junior varsity tournament Monday afternoon in Parsons.
Seven teams competed in the tourney, with LCHS taking fifth with 10 points and Parsons taking seventh with seven points.
Pittsburg High School won the event with 30 points while Independence edged out Neodesha (19 points) with 21 points.

LCHS Red, Gold wins pool play in annual wood bat tourney; JV takes two from Cherryvale Monday
After winning the first two Brian Anderon JV Wood Bat Tournament's, the Grizzlies went out and took the top two spots in the third annual event, which concluded Saturday at Vic George Field in Altamont.
The six-team tourney changed to five at the last minute when Iola withdrew, leaving an open spot.
The Grizzlies split into a "Red" and a "Gold" team to fill out the pools with an even number of teams.

Saints compete in Altoona invite Monday
The St. Patrick Catholic School track and field team traveled to Altoona for the Altoona-Midway Invitational on Monday.
The Lady Saints took first overall in three events.
Meagan Hizey, Morgan Hizey, Brenna Forbes and Bridget Dunlay teamed up for first in the medley relay (2:16.27).

Parsons JV takes sixth at Iola meet
Iola High School hosted the Buck Quincy invitational in Iola Monday afternoon.
The host Mustangs won the junior varsity golf event with a 350 as a team, some 37 strokes better than second-place Burlington.
Independence rounded out the top three with a 388 as a team.
Parsons High School took sixth overall with a 430 and Labette County High School came in seventh with a 431 in the 11-team event.

Vikings place fifth in TOC
Four members of the Parsons High School tennis team traveled to Wichita Saturday for the prestigious Tournament of Champions.
The Vikings took fifth overall in a 15-team field.
Parsons junior and No. 1 doubles competitor Payton Hays took fifth overall in the singles portion of the tourney.

Parsons baseball earns first win of year in split with Coffeyville Friday
The Vikings are no longer winless.
Parsons High School baseball earned their first overall, and league, victory of the season Friday evening in Coffeyville thanks to an 11-0 win over the Golden Tornado in the opening game of a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader.
Coffeyville earned the split with a 13-3 win in the night cap.

A tough schedule left the Cardinals 1-5 this week.
Three days after being swept by Highland and a day after splitting with Crowder, the Labette Community College softball team welcomed NJCAA No. 5-ranked Northeast Oklahoma A&M (31-6 overall) and fell twice to the Lady Norse.
NEO won game one 10-0 behind a three-run third inning and six-run fourth before winning game two 9-3.

St. Paul outlasts Marmaton Valley in sweep
MORAN — The St. Paul Indians jumped back in the win column with a two-game sweep over Marmaton Valley in Moran Thursday evening.
But it wasn’t easy.
St. Paul improved to 12-2 on the season with the sweep, winning game one 5-1 and game two 4-2 in 11 innings.
In game one, SPHS junior pitcher Riley O’Brien pitched seven innings and struck out 14 batters on the way to the win.

The Parsons High School junior varsity baseball team came away with a two-game split against Coffeyville Wednesday.
Parsons fell 16-1 in the opener but came back with a 6-5 victory in the second game.
The Vikings went up 1-0 early in the opener when Elyjah Lyons was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Erie golf team takes fifth at Fredonia invite
The Erie High School golf team finished fifth out of seven teams at the Fredonia Invitational golf tourney on Tuesday.
Host Fredonia took first with a score of 340 followed by Olpe (343), Burlington (363), Eureka (363) and Erie (381).
Yates Center (480) and Sedan (488) rounded out the scoring.

Zaleski places for second week in row
For the second week in a row local tournament angler Jim Zaleski cashed in at a fishing tournament hampered by thunderstorms and lightening.
Zaleski, a resident of rural Parsons, and his teammate Zac Udock of Joplin fought the elements and some less-than-perfect fishing conditions on Grand Lake to a seventh-place finish out of a field of 254 boats this past weekend of April 14-15.

Strong, breezy winds greeted the Parsons Middle School golf team Wednesday in Garnett at the Anderson County Invitational held at the Garnett Country Club.
Eighth-grader Lee Head led the Vikings with a 52, good for 14th overall and a medal.
