Devils, Chargers headed to state wrestling
Wrestlers from Erie and Cherryvale High Schools will compete at the 2013 Class 3-2-1A State Championships at Fort Hays State on Friday & Saturday.
Six wrestlers from Cherryvale and two from Erie advanced to state by finishing in the top four at the Fredonia Regional.
The first round matches of the state tournament are now set.

LCC women win third-straight

IOLA — After snapping a seven-game losing streak, the Labette Community College women’s basketball team has now won three-straight.
The Lady Cardinals earned a 55-40 win over Allen County on Monday night in Jayhawk East action. Monday’s win gave Anna Nimz’s Cardinals some payback, as well, as Allen County had defeated LCC 61-50 in Parsons on Jan. 21.

Cards pull off OT win

IOLA — Keshaun Hamilton hit a fade-away jumper from the baseline with just a few seconds left to give the Labette Community College men’s basketball team a 73-71 overtime win over Allen County on Monday night.
The game was tied with time running out when Hamilton got the ball down low. The 6-10 Hamilton took a dribble, spun towards the baseline, elevated, faded away and knocked in a short jumper.

Lady Chargers beat Humboldt
CHERRYVALE — The Cherryvale Chargers ended their regular season on a sour note, falling to Humboldt at home 70-35 in a Tri-Valley League high school basketball game Tuesday night.
Cherryvale fell way behind in a first quarter that saw Humboldt rack up 30 points, and the Chargers never recovered. The Cubs had 50 points by the break and won 70-35.
Sophomore Dakota Trout led the Chargers in scoring with eight points.

ERIE — The Erie Lady Red Devils beat Neodesha by 23 points Tuesday night in Tri-Valley League high school basketball action.
Junior Bret McGuire sank eight field goals and finished with 18 points to lead Erie in scoring. She also had six rebounds. Oswego teams cruise
OSWEGO — Oswego’s boys cruised to a 76-52 win here Tuesday night to wrap up the regular season.
Oswego rolled to an early lead that grew to a 36-18 advantage by halftime. The Indians didn’t let up in the second half to get the 24-point win.

ST. PAUL — The Chetopa Hornets got off to a sluggish start on Tuesday night against St. Paul in a Three Rivers League high school basketball matchup, but they got hot when it mattered most.

Pittsburg spoils LCHS' title dream

ALTAMONT — To have any shot at a league title, the Labette County High School girls basketball team had to win Tuesday night.
Pittsburg didn’t cooperate.
The Purple Dragons stunned the Lady Grizzlies 48-46 at Harrison Gymnasium, playing the spoiler role in a big way.
The loss ended any hopes of a league title for the Grizzlies.

ALTAMONT — The Labette County Grizzlies made a statement on Tuesday night.
By sharing the basketball and with some tenacious defense, Labette County earned a dominating 67-45 win over Pittsburg on Tuesday night in SEK League action.

The Labette County High School basketball teams will host the Pittsburg Purple Dragons tonight in SEK League action.
The varsity girls play at 6 p.m., with the varsity boys to follow.

Fix headed back to state wrestling tourney

PITTSBURG — Moments after securing a trip to state, Andrew Fix appeared calm, cool and collected.
But on the inside, Fix was a bit more excited, if not frenzied.
“I wanted to yell as loud as I could as soon as the match was over,” Fix said of the moment he realized he was going back to state.

TOPEKA — Five members of the Parsons High School boys swim team competed at the 2013 5-4-3-2-1A State Swimming & Diving Championships at Topeka’s Capitol Federal Natatorium over the weekend.
Tanner Smith of Parsons advanced to the finals in the 100 yard freestyle.

Tarial Johnson provided a much-needed spark, and the Labette Community College men’s basketball team overcame a sluggish start to knock off visiting Neosho County 80-74 on Saturday.

Oswego boys beat 4A Girard
GIRARD—The Class 2A Oswego Indians knocked off Class 4A Girard 62-56 on Thursday night in non-league boys basketball action.
Girard had a nine-point lead in the third quarter, but the Indians rallied.
