Parsons places one in regional wrestling tourney
The Parsons High School wrestling team placed 12th out of 15 teams in the Fort Scott High School-hosted regional wrestling tourney over the weekend. Senior Thatcher Murdock placed third overall to advance to the state tourney, while several other Vikes were a match away from earning a trip to Salina.

Cardinals drop two to Cowley in Saturday action
The Labette Community College basketball teams dropped a pair of games to Cowley Community College over the weekend.
The LCC men dropped to 16-10 on the season with a 66-58 loss to the Tigers. The loss moves LCC to 6-8 overall in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Eastern Division.
The Labette women dropped their fourth in a row in a 79-59 game with CCC.

Vikings' Thatcher Murdock heading back to state
Parsons High School’s Thatcher Murdock will be making a trip to the state wrestling tourney for the second year in a row thanks to his showing at the Fort Scott regional tourney over the weekend.
Murdock (32-5) will take on Slade Sare (28-12) of Abilene in the first round of the state tourney in the 132-pound bracket. He was the only Viking to qualify for the state tourney this year.

They’re hoping to bridge the gap in 2012.
LCC baseball finished the 2012 season with an 18-27 record overall and a 15-21 mark in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

Labette sweeps Illinois Central to open year 2-0
The Labette Community College baseball team opened the season with a pair of wins over Illinois Central College on Sunday at the LCC baseball diamond.
Labette grabbed a 10-0 win in the first game and capped the day off with a 4-1 victory.
The Redbirds finished the opener with nine hits and got a stellar performance out of pitcher Kacy Cook, who needed just 51 pitches in six innings of play.

5K run/2K walk coming to Parsons in March
The St. Patrick’s 5K run/2K walk will take place at 9 a.m. on March 17 at 1807 Stevens Avenue in Parsons.
The event is sponsored by the St. Patrick Catholic School council communication committee.
Age groups will be divided into 20 and under, 21-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50 and over. There will be a male and female division during the event.
Check in times will last from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and will take place at Parish Hall.

Labette County senior Gatewood is state bound
FORT SCOTT — Labette County High School senior Spencer Gatewood qualified for the Class 4A tournament with a third-place finish in the 285-pound division at the regional wrestling tourney here over the weekend.
Gatewood defeated Trey Colburn of Iola, Blake Howey of Anderson County and Colburn again each by pinfall to qualify for state. His only loss came to regional champ Brock Bennett of Pittsburg in two overtimes.

Lahey qualifies for Class 3-1A state wrestling
Erie High School’s Rian Lahey took fourth overall Saturday in the Class 3A regional tourney hosted by Eureka.
Lahey defeated Trevor Breshears of Burlington via 26-11 tech fall in the consolation semi-finals of the 138-pound bracket to qualify.
Lahey is now 26-11 on the season and will wrestle James Landoll of Marysville in the opening round of the state tourney.

Oswego girls defeat Galena
GALENA — Bricynn Johnson scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a non-league win for the Oswego Lady Indians against Galena on Friday night.
Oswego held Galena to six first-quarter points for a nine-point edge heading into the second period. Both teams scored nine points in the second, allowing Oswego to go into the half with a 24-15 lead. The Indians outscored Galena 15-7 in the third quarter before coasting to a 48-36 win.

ERIE — The Erie Red Devils edged out Baxter Springs in a high school basketball CNC League game Friday night.
"The Red Devils played very hard tonight. Baxter led by nine going into the fourth quarter, and my boys played hard and chipped away at the lead. Our free throw shooting made a big difference and helped us to finish out the game," Erie coach Caleb Reimer said.
