PITTSBURG — An injury to a key player derailed Labette County at the Pittsburg Class 4A Sub-State Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

Area volleyball: Erie, Oswego, Chetopa fall in sub-state title matches
CANEY — Erie’s bid to reach the state volleyball tournament came up one win short.
Southeast-Cherokee defeated Erie in the title match of the Caney Valley Class 3A Volleyball Sub-State on Saturday.
Second-seeded Erie defeated host Caney Valley in the first round, 25-12, 25-13.
The Red Devils then defeated St. Mary’s Colgan 25-21, 25-21 in the semifinals.

Area runners advance to state meet
LAKE AFTON — Labette County will be taking a full boys team to the state cross country meet.
The Grizzlies finished third in the team standings at the Bishop Carroll Class 4A Regional Cross Country Meet on Saturday at Lake Afton. The top three teams qualified for the state meet. Mulvane was first, Winfield took second and LCHS was third. It was the third-straight year that the Grizzlies have qualified.

Oswego girls advance to state cross country meet
BURLINGTON — Oswego will be sending its entire girls cross country team to the state meet.
The Indians finished third in the team standings at the Burlington 2A Regional Meet on Saturday, grabbing the final spot for state. The top three teams advanced. Maranatha Academy won the team title on the girls side, with Bishop Seabury second and Oswego third.

Labette County defeated Baxter Springs 34-0 on Friday in district football action.

Cherryvale defeats Erie
CHERRYVALE — The Cherryvale Chargers rolled to a 21-0 halftime lead on their way to a high school football district win Friday night over the Erie Red Devils.
The Chargers beat the Devils 35-6 to improve to 1-1 in Class 3A District 7. Erie fell to 0-2 in the district.

Girard defeats Parsons

Led by a solid running game, and with a big size advantage on the line, visiting Girard powered past the Parsons Vikings 68-13 on Friday night at Marvel Park in the second district game of the 2012 high school football season.

St. Paul loses to Marais des Cygnes
MELVERN — St. Paul High School lost its first football game here Friday night against Marais des Cygnes Valley, 52-40.
Mistakes limited time in the endzone for the Indians — now 3-1 in district play and 6-1 overall — but they still managed a fourth-quarter comeback to keep the score close.

Oswego defeats Jayhawk-Linn
MOUND CITY — Oswego traded touchdowns with Jayhawk-Linn in the first half before pulling ahead after halftime for a high school district football victory on the road Friday night.

A bit of the unknown awaits area cross country runners this weekend.
Runners from Parsons and Labette County High Schools are heading to the Class 4A Bishop Carroll Regional Cross Country Meet at Lake Afton on Saturday. Neither the Vikings, nor the Grizzlies have ever competed at the site before.

Rivals Parsons and Labette County will meet right off the bat on Saturday at the Class 4A Pittsburg Volleyball Sub-State.
The event begins at 2 p.m. at Pittsburg High School.
The Grizzlies are seeded fourth at 18-13. The Vikings are the fifth seed and enter the postseason at 14-21. The Grizzlies have defeated the Vikings in every meeting this season.

The Labette Community College volleyball team fell to 2-22 on the season with a home loss to Highland on Wednesday night.
The Scotties defeated the Cardinals 25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 25-20.

The Jayhawk Conference released its preseason basketball polls this week.
The Labette Community College men’s basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Jayhawk East.
The LCC women’s team was picked to finish sixth in the Jayhawk East.

Parsons Wrestling Club holding sign-up day on Saturday
The Parsons Wrestling Club will hold the first of several sign-up days this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Marvel Park Stadium. Kids from 5 to 14 can sign-up. The cost is $50 and parents are asked to bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate.
There will also be a sign-up day on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9-noon, also at Marvel Park.

Cherryvale to honor 1975 football team on Friday

All these years later, Tracy Wenino still remembers the day the Cherryvale High School football team played for the state championship in 1975.
Wenino attended the game as a child and still recalls that rainy day.

That’s the way Ashley Spencer describes her team’s trip to the Class 4A State Girls Golf Tournament in Hesston. The Grizzlies competed at state on Monday, capping off the school’s first season fielding a girls golf team.
