Schibi stepped to the plate last and in need of two home runs to tie leader Cesar Breinga of Cimarron River. Schibi came up with four homers to win the event outright. Parsons team member Luke Wolgamott hit one home run and tied for third overall. Cyrus Kitchen of Osawatomie took first overall in the pitching contest. Parsons pitchers Noah Chalker and Drew Fuentez were entered in that event. The 11-year-old state tourney will kick off today in Winway Park at Sonny Johnson Field. Parsons will play Cimarron River at 7:30 p.m.

Sanders worked with a group of Parsons High School National Honor Society students to paint the side of the building Wednesday afternoon. Blue and gold paint was used. The Bathroom facilities are also receiving new vents to help airflow. Youth and adults volunteered for the project, which will be done in time for the 11-year-old Cal Ripken League State Tournament coming to Parsons on Friday.

Forbes was named the MVP of the state final thanks to his four RBIs. Labette County will now travel to Grand Forks, North Dakota on July 25-30 for the Midwest Plains Regional Tournament.

Jack Burke stands on his daughter’s property at Osage and Boyd Friday next to a tree that had been struck by lightning just minutes before. The lightning hit with such force that large splinters of wood were found scattered around the property and across the street, some deeply embedded in the ground more than 100 yards away. This is a prime example of why people should not stand under trees when lightning is active, Burke said.

The 2012 Nation of Patriots Tour traveled through Parsons Friday morning, including a lunch stop at Ernesto’s. The riders were enroute to Wichita from Joplin. The Nation of Patriots raises money and awareness for wounded veterans. This year’s tour will touch most of 48 states and end Sept. 1 in Wisconsin, which is where the tour began. Labette Center for Mental Health Services staff handed out flags that the public could wave near 16th and Main as the riders passed. Ernie Barr and his grandchildren, Ethan Barr, 3, and Jadyn Barr, 6, waited for the Patriots to ride past. The Patriots were stopped at 16th on Main just to the east.

John Gilbreath of Erie throws wood under a pot of beans cooking for the Old Soldiers and Sailors Reunion in Erie Friday afternoon just before the rain hit. Gilbreath has been taking part in cooking the beans for two years and has lived in Erie for 12 years. The reunion concludes today. Events today include a parade at 10:30 a.m., a two-person golf scramble at Prairie Ridge Golf Course, an arts and crafts fair and car and truck show. Tonight, the annual Kansas Junior Bullriders Association will appear at 6 p.m. in the rodeo arena.
