Mary Maxine (Meadows) Cavitte, 69, of Independence, Missouri, died on Friday, April 28, 2017, at Independence.

She was was born Feb. 14, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the union of the Rev. Daniel O. and Mary Frances Meadows. She is the second of nine children. She married Lloyd Franklin Cavitte Jr.

The family moved a lot during her growing years. Maxine lived in St. Louis, Festus, Cape Girardeau and Springfield, Missouri, as a child. She lived in Topeka before moving to Parsons in the 10th grade. She attended Parsons High school through her junior year and graduated from Oswego High school. Maxine got her nursing degree from Labette Community College. 

Maxine loved taking care of others and reached her life-time goal of becoming a nurse. She became a registered nurse and worked at several facilities during her lifetime, including the Long Beach, California, Veterans Administration Hospital, where she worked with paralyzed and geriatric patients. She last worked at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center, from which she retired because of her disabilities. She had a reputation for truly caring for her patients wherever she worked.

Maxine was happiest when she was busy doing something. She loved to sew, sing and read mysteries. She loved taking classes and learning new things. She was always ready to hit the road and attended all kinds of events involving her family, church and friends. She really enjoyed music, sang in the Hamilton Chapel Church choir and made sure her daughters, Jamie and Alisha, took violin lessons. She was quite happy when Lloyd became a great musician starting in junior high school.

Maxine loved the Lord and her church family. She taught Sunday school and especially loved teaching children. She often spoke of the joy she found in working with some of the “at risk” children who often came to her class. Maxine showed her love for others by serving as a foster parent to several children including special needs infants.

She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her home going her six children, including two adopted, Lloyd, Michael, Alisha Wright (deceased), Jamie Runyan (John), Brittany and Jonathan. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Joanne Meadows of Manor, Texas, and siblings, Marion Larkins (Melvin) Snellville, Georgia, Brenda Tyler (Raymond) Los Angeles, California, Brian (KeKe) Barber (Toni) of Parsons and Carolyn Barber of Oswego; five grandchildren, Mercedes, Quatera, Kya, Hendrix and Harrison; along with a great host of other relatives and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Daniel Meadows Jr., James Velroy Meadows; and a sister, Patricia Ann Barber. 

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hamilton Chapel United Methodist Church in Parsons. A memorial tree will be planted at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center immediately following.
