CHETOPA — James C. “Jim” Gwartney, 77, formerly of Mound Valley, passed away at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at Chetopa Manor in Chetopa.

Jim was born to Elmer and Marie (Bartlett) Gwartney on July 9, 1941, in Mound Valley.

Growing up in the Mound Valley area, Jim graduated from Mound Valley High School. He worked for area farmers, hauling hay and working cattle. Jim also worked for Emerson Electric in Independence and then for Labette County at the rock crusher until his retirement. 

Jim was a member of the Mound Valley Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.

Survivors include two brothers, David Gwartney of Parsons and Charles Gwartney of Anderson, Missouri; two sisters, Betty Morrow of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma, and Edith Olson of Mound Valley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Clay Edward Gwartney.

Following cremation, a graveside memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mound Valley Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Parsons.
