CHETOPA — Violet M. Bates, 94, of Chetopa passed away at 2:43 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at Chetopa Manor.

She was born on Jan. 4, 1925, in Coffeyville to Earnest Adolphus and Katie Katherine (Crome) Furnas. Violet grew up in the Pumpkin Creek area near Melrose.

As a young woman, she married George A. Schultz. The couple later divorced.

On April 4, 1996, Violet and Warren F. Bates were married at First Baptist Church in Chetopa. Warren preceded her in death on Aug. 22, 2013.

Throughout her life, Violet worked as a cook. She cooked at the Old Mill Inn in Chetopa, owned and operated the Coffee Cup Café in Chetopa and was a cook and dietitian for the Head Start Program.

Violet was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Chetopa.

Survivors include five sons, Aubury Schultz (Chloe Ann) of Parsons, Marty Schultz (Lorraine) of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, Ronnie Schultz (Teresa) of Buhler, Robin Schultz (Sue) of Arkansas City and Brian Schultz (Shelly) of Zanesville, Ohio; eight daughters, Wanda Underwood, Barbara Evans, both of Chetopa, Vicky Cook (Larry) of Parsons, Charlotte Alexander (Jim) of Macon, Georgia, Rebecca Schultz (Antonio) of Texas, Tammy Mercer (Raymond) of Newport, Florida, Christina Appelman (Mike) of Ragu and Traci Shorter of Welch, Oklahoma; a brother, James Furnas of Stockton, California; two sisters, Ouida Poulson of Keller, Texas, and Delores Wiens of Oswego; 33 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren F. Bates, on Aug. 22, 2013; her parents; four brothers; and two sisters.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Chetopa High School’s new gym. Burial will follow immediately at Oak Hill Cemetery, Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, Chetopa.
